The impetus to form a local historical organization came when a few people with an interest in preserving the history of Carleton Place and Beckwith Township advertised a public meeting in November 1979 for the purpose of garnering support. The society, a non-profit organization, was incorporated as an affiliate member of the Ontario Historical Society.
